Using := for assignment?

A late-breaking suggestion from Martin: he is proposing switching to := for assignment in Scala.

This isn’t as out of left field as it might sound — that’s how it works in many languages, including a lot of the older ones. But it’s certainly not a trivial tweak.

My personal opinion is that it’s too big a change for this close to feature freeze, but there’s certainly room for valid discussion. If you’re interested in the topic, I recommend reading the conversation linked above.
